EiM School in Top 3 for World’s Best School Prize

Congratulations to Green School Bali

What is the World's Best School Prize?

The World's Best School Prizes identify and celebrate schools' leading and innovative practices that have impacted the lives of their students and their community. The categories for the prize include Environmental Action, Community Collaboration, Innovation, Overcoming Adversity, and Supporting Healthy Lives.

We are thrilled that Green School Bali (GSB) has made its way into the Top 3 finalists for this year’s World’s Best School Prize for Environmental Action! Now we need your help to win!

Earlier this year, Green School Bali was shortlisted in the Top 10 for Environmental Action, and the latest announcement has come after months of a rigorous selection process and is a further recognition of GSB’s efforts in weaving environmental sustainability into its curriculum and campus.

Green School Bali

Inspired and guided by the United Nations' Sustainable Development goals and Permaculture Principles, we design our class and curriculum from the lens of a greener world. We also walk the talk by shaping every component of Green School Bali’s facilities and educational model to ensure environmental sustainability. The school uses compost toilets, processes more than one tonne of trash at its Kembali recycling centre per month, serves meals made with ingredients from the school gardens, and feeds leftovers to the school pigs and black soldier flies—the larvae of which are used to feed the school chickens.

In 2015, students and faculty at Green School Bali launched the Bio Bus to reduce the carbon footprint of school transportation. In addition to encouraging bike-rides and carpooling where possible, students worked together to create Indonesia’s first 100% biofuel-powered transportation system using recycled cooking oil. In 2017, the student-led Operation Rain or Shine (OROS) helped Green School achieve nearly 85% renewable energy from solar panels and a hydro-vortex.

Next Steps

The winner of each of the five World’s Best School Prizes – for Community Collaboration, Environmental Action, Innovation, Overcoming Adversity, and Supporting Healthy Lives – will be chosen from the Top 3 finalists, based on rigorous criteria by a judging panel comprising of leaders across the globe, including academics, educators, NGOs, social entrepreneurs, government representatives, and the private sector.

The winners will be announced in October 2022 at World Education Week. A prize of US$250,000 will be equally shared among the winners of the five prizes, with each receiving an award of US$50,000.

At EiM, we are on a mission to pioneer education for a sustainable future–part of this is ensuring that sustainability is embedded across all schools. We are proud that Green School Bali is leading the way and is being recognised for doing so. Even with all the progress our schools have made, we know we have a long way to go on this journey.

Congratulations to Green School Bali! May this recognition ignite and inspire future endeavours from all members of our group to continue expanding the mission of educating changemakers who will regenerate our world.
